An overbite. Crowded teeth. Uneven spacing. You know you need an orthodontic solution, but which is the right one? An orthodontist may recommend traditional orthodontics (either in front of or behind your teeth) or ceramic brackets to help them blend in more.
But have you thought about Invisalign? You can complete this state-of-the-art adult braces option right here at Raleigh Dental Arts, and it seems like it would be more convenient. How do you choose which is the right type of cosmetic braces for you?
Think About The Timeline
If you’re an adult, especially a professional, you have places to go and people to meet. You probably don’t have a lot of spare time, and are looking for the fastest way to straighter teeth. And if you are a stay at home mom, your time definitely comes at a premium!
Two years is the typical time frame for traditional “bracket and wire” braces. Two years of monthly visits. Two years of brackets and wires irritating your cheeks and gums after each adjustment.
With Invisalign, the treatment time can be as short as 6 months, or as long as 18 months. You’ll still have periodic visits but only every 6-8 weeks. Instead of adjustments, you’ll start a new tray every two weeks in the convenience of your own home.
Dental Hygiene and Periodontal Disease
Great oral hygiene is important whether you have braces, Invisalign, or nothing at all. The challenge with orthodontia is to keep the appliance super clean, as well as your teeth and gums. Braces make that even more challenging, since the appliance is affixed to your teeth. Food particles or bacteria get stuck in the brackets that can be difficult to brush away. Additionally, it’s hard to floss adequately, which can lead to gingivitis or periodontal disease.
It is equally important to practice great oral hygiene with Invisalign for the same reasons, but fortunately it is much easier. Just remove your tray before eating or drinking. After finishing, you’ll need to brush and floss, rinse the tray, and put it back in your mouth. Clean the trays when you brush in the morning and evening to keep them white. They’re fairly easy to maintain!
Of course the most obvious difference between Invisalign and braces is the way they look. There are options for braces to hide them or help them blend in; ceramic and lingual braces are far less noticeable than typical metal brackets. However, nothing truly compares to the natural look that the clear trays of Invisalign provide. No one will even notice them as you go through your daily routine.
Invisalign is able to treat most alignment issue, though there are one or two that are better treated by braces. Teeth that need to be moved vertically and turned may be more challenging, but not impossible, to treat with aligners.
